One Room Challenge: Week 2

This week has been a slow start to the One Room Challenge, I had a plan, and I was excited about it for a long time, but now I want to switch it all up completely. So, I’m going to give myself the freeway to do so.

While normally the first step would be to re-paint the room, I’m going to do this as the last step. Why you ask? Because I still don’t know what color I want to paint it, lol! The space is large and I really want to push myself out of my comfort zone. So, I’m still deciding.

In the meantime, I figured I’d start with a simpler project. The changing table. I do love the shape of the furniture, and it has some decent bones. So, I figure, why not repaint it and try something new. I picked it up on FBMP two years back for $30, so it won’t be a total loss, if this plan doesn’t go about the way I imagined.

I did a lot of research on painting wooden furniture and brands to use. Benjamin Moore Advance came highly recommended. I do love how bold and saturated their colors are. It’s exactly what I’m looking for to create a statement piece.

I chose Benjamin Moore Advance Evening Blue (satin finish) to do this project. I was inspired by the blue vase from the Jungalow x Target collection.

The steps are fairly simple:

1. Clean: Use soap and water and clean off the dirt and grime off the furniture piece
2. Sand: Use a 150-grit sandpaper to gentle sand the wood, this helps the primer
3. Prime: Primer helps the intended paint to adhere to the wood properly. I used a foam brush, roller and spray paint gun to prime this piece. I feel the roller creates an even coat but you need a foam brush to get into the corners and edges. A spray gun was very exciting to use. However, this was my first time, so I’m still getting the hang of it. I used Zinsser BIN Primer to prime the changing table.
4. Paint: Once the primer dried, you can scratch the surface using your finger nail. If the primer doesn’t come off, then you have done a good job painting it. And you can start painting the furniture piece. I used the spray gun, but I wasn’t doing something right, so I switched the foam roller and brush for the second coat. Using the Benjamin Moore Evening Blue paint, ensured I needed to use only two coats of paint for an even coverage. Here's the spray gun I used.
